Every Fourth of July pet parents everywhere are met with the same issue. Their pets are terrified while the neighborhood is lighting up every firework and sparkler they have. Here are some helpful tips I've used before to soothe my dogs and cats.
1. Don't light off fireworks near your pup!
Although humans know to run from fireworks when they start, dogs may get lost and confused, and end up getting injured from the fire and sparks. Even if your dog doesn't mind the sound, they can still easily get hurt.
2. Keep them indoors
Keeping them inside, away from the loudest of noises is critical. Closed doors will prevent your animals from bolting when the first firecrackers sound off and allow you to keep watch on them and help them with their anxiety.
3. Check your animals tags and chips
Sometimes the unthinkable happens and pets escape and run too far to find their way home. Be prepared and vigilant. Make sure your pet has tags with your name and number, and that they are microchipped so they can be identified if their tag is lost or you can't be reached.
4. Spend extra time with your pet!
Simply spending time caring for your pet, talking to them and petting them. Your pet will be scared and the simple comfort you offer can help them make it through the 4th of July season without going into an extreme panic or trying to run off.
