How To Prevent Rape

It's all about understanding consent.

As many of us know at this point, there is an epidemic on college campuses. This epidemic is that one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted or raped during their time in college. Almost anyone that goes to college will either be a victim or meet a victim of one of the worst crimes that one person can commit on another. There are often stories of these cases that either go viral or spread around campuses, and we always feel awful for survivors. However, many people take the route of victim blaming rather than putting fault on the actual perpetrators of the crime. This is not how we treat any other crime and only creates a system of more individuals becoming afraid to tell their stories and receive help.

So since we so often fail to actually address those who are at fault for rape, I thought I'd make a reminder for any of the potential rapists of exactly what they need to avoid doing in order to not commit a crime.

If a person is unconscious, intoxicated, or sleeping, then they are unable to consent.

When person is wearing clothes that you think express their desire for sex, then you better think again, because clothing cannot express consent.

Just because a person comes to your room with you to hang out does not mean that they have consented.

Sometimes a person consents to specific conditions. If those conditions are broken, then that consent no longer is valid.

Having someone consent to sex with you once does not mean that the consent carries over into future situations.

Someone who has had many different partners still must consent before you try having sex with them.

If a person does not verbally agree to sex, then they have not consented. Only yes means yes.

It really is not hard to understand that consent is needed in order to have sex. Without consent there is no sex; there is just rape. There is absolutely no one to blame for rape except for the rapist. Only the rapist is to blame if they are sent to jail and their "life is ruined," which is only a suitable punishment for the damage that they gave to another individual.

There is no excuse for rape to occur, especially at the rate that it does on college campuses. Rather than blaming the victims of these crimes, we need to start blaming the rapists. We also need to put more of a focus on preventing potential rapists from raping by educating them about consent rather than educating potential victims on how to dress or behave to prevent being raped. This is the only way we will be able to address the rape culture that exists in our society.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
