Summer is here! This is the perfect time to start exploring the world. I recently studied abroad and had a blast, and I encourage everyone to get out and travel. The trip to Spain was my first time traveling internationally, and I had no idea what to expect or how to prepare. If your are planning on traveling soon, this article is for you! Even if you aren't planning a trip now, these are tips that will help you in the future. All of these tips are coming from my study-abroad experience.
Tip 1: Find a destination
Let's be honest, you kind of have to have this decided in order to prepare, right? Start with Googling your desired destination to get a good idea of the weather, best times to visit, and to save money.
Tip 2: Flights
International flights can be costly, but there's always a way to find discounts. Many websites help find cheapest flights for your trip and also offer payment plans. Pay close attention to sites and research them to make sure it isn't a scam.
Tip 3: Hotel
Try to find hotels that are in central areas. Remember, you will be in a foreign country, which means you aren't familiar with the area. It might be hard for you to read signs, so being in a place where most people know how to speak to tourists is helpful.
Tip 4: Passport
This is important people!! You kind of really need this to get on the plane and enter another country. Passport applications can be obtained through the local office or post office. Before you mail off your passport, you will need a picture of yourself (no selfies allowed). The number of requirements for this picture is ridiculous, so to save yourself a headache, just go get the pictures taken at Walgreens. Visit the U.S. Passports & International Travels website to see updated requirements and prices.
Tip 5: Plan, plan, plan
You've spent all of this money to travel, the last thing you want to do is sit in your hotel room all day. Look for places to go and activities to do so you can maximize your time.
Tip 6: Luggage
Make sure you have durable and lightweight luggage that will survive your trip abroad. If you're anything like me, you like to overpack to make sure you are prepared for any and everything. However, when traveling internationally you should be considerate of other cultures ways of life. Most countries require a lot of walking, and you don't want to be stuck carrying a heavy suitcase. Pack light and smart.
Tip 7: Money
In case you didn't know, dollars are only important in America. When traveling, you must exchange your money for the local currency. This task sounds easy, but can be very tricky; it is the perfect opportunity to get scammed. NEVER exchange money in the airport, the exchange rate is extremely high! Exchange houses also often have high exchange rates, which means you won't get as much "bang for your buck". Before you leave the United States, check with your bank to see if you can exchange money through them.
Tip 8: Enjoy
Now that you have all of the tips to get you to your destination, when you finally make it, don't be afraid to embrace the local culture and learn more about it. Try new foods, shop, and sightsee.
