How To Not Procrastinate: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Make a plan

Write out a list of what you want to get done that day. That way, each time you accomplish something, you can satisfyingly check it off your list. Getting to that last task and checking it off is one of the best feelings in the world. Creating the list is just the first step to success! Well, success for the day. Tomorrow...well, we’ll deal with that when we get there. Being a college student means taking everything day-by-day.

Step 2: Find your study spot

Make sure the spot is somewhere you know you’ll be able to concentrate, whether you are the type of person that needs the absolute silence of a library or the type of person that can work in the hustle and bustle of a café.

Step 3: Have all of your materials ready

Pack your bags son, because you’re going on a road trip to the land of productivity and you cannot arrive there empty-handed. Laptop, pencil case, notebooks, textbooks, water bottle, snacks, headphones. All of this and anything else you may need are essential to having a successful study session. Without them, you may feel lost and less inclined to do the work that you originally set out to do.

Step 4: Isolate yourself

I don’t mean to literally isolate yourself. If you need to work alone in order to get stuff done, then by all means fly solo my friend. If you can work well when in the presence of a few people, that’s great too. What I mean here is isolate yourself from everything outside the table you’re sitting at. No Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and for goodness sake, no Snapchat! You can let everyone know what you’re doing with a picture/video that lasts 10 seconds when you’re doing something a little more exciting.

Step 5: Get going

This is it. You have the perfect study spot, all of the materials you need, and social media locked up for the next couple hours. It’s finally time to get going. At this point, it’s a mental game. You have to motivate yourself to get what’s in front of you done. To do this, think about how much better you’ll feel going to bed tonight, and waking up tomorrow morning feeling accomplished and worrying about one less thing to do. It’s all a matter of setting yourself up for what’s to come.

Step 6: Success

That’s it! You’ve done it. You’ve successfully completed your assignment, successfully studied for that exam, successfully did what you had to do! Let out a sigh of relief and be proud of yourself. Treat yourself with some ice cream, take a selfie for your Snapchat friends, and get a good nights sleep. Today is accomplished, and tomorrow is a new day.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
