How To Not Be Social

Who needs a social life?!

How To Not Be Social
MIT Sloan

Not going to lie, I didn't really want much of a social life. But the one I had consisted of thousands of Facetime calls because none of my friends go to my school, or even live in the same state.

  1. Get a job
    • While the paychecks are nice, having a job takes tons of time away from family and friends. In the beginning of the summer, I started working crazy hours, like 25 hours a week as a cashier. I loved the paychecks, but I hated not eating with my family – instead I relied on discounted food from work.
  2. Start or join an extracurricular
    • Fall is golf season, which means I would practice almost every day or I would have a match once or twice a week. After golf came Mock Trial, which took way more time. My senior year of high school I decided I wanted to be an attorney for my school’s Mock Trial team – big mistake. While I loved what I was doing, it was so time-consuming. I would pull all-nighters modifying my questions and finding holes in my witnesses’ testimony. After Mock Trial came softball. And with all of this, I was still working 10-15 hours a week.
  3. Purposefully avoid friendships
    • I’ve had my fair share of friendships gone bad, so I’m always leery when starting a new friendship. If you go to a school anything like my high school, good luck having good friends. 9 times out of 10 they weren’t reliable and talked all kinds of crap behind your back.
  4. Have chores at home
    • Not going to lie, I really don’t have that many chores, but some of them take a while. Like cutting the grass – for a while our tractor was broken so we had to use the push mower for the entire yard, which was killer in the summer heat. Sometimes it would take me 2 hours if I had no help, but most of the time my parents and sister helped.
  5. Having weird hobbies
    • I can’t really relate to this, but I’ve seen a few people that I’m sure would be able to explain this better.
  6. Having no interest in sports
    • In middle school I gave up sports for the time being. While I loved going to baseball games, I never watched them on T.V. or participated in them. Gym was the worst class because I was not athletic AT ALL.
  7. Being in accelerated courses
    • I took a variety of AP, GT, and honors classes in high school which may have contributed to my social status. Countless essays + projects + tests = NO SLEEP

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
