I recently stumbled upon this quote while scrolling through Pinterest. I normally only use Pinterest when I'm looking for workout ideas, cute clothes, or recipes but this quote really stuck with me. As a rising sophomore in college (with currently thousands of dollars in debt), I'm always concerned about money and whether I'm doing enough to pay back my loans.
Summer is a particularly hard season because you're trying to pick up as many shifts at work in order to save for the school year, but on the other hand, you're trying to make the most of your few months at home. This summer has especially been a challenge for me trying to balance spending and saving.
Although it's incredibly important to save money for school, it's also important to LIVE YOUR LIFE and ENJOY YOURSELF (treat yo self).
I'm an incredibly frugal person (most of the time), but this quote is helping me to remember that life isn't about just making money. You're supposed to live a life that makes you happy. So when your friends want to get together on a random Thursday night for a spontaneous adventure, you should go even if you only are working three shifts this week and feel like you should pick up an extra one. Or you should sign up for that yoga class you've always wanted to take but never have time to do during the school year.
I've been trying my best to keep this quote in mind by finally signing up for yoga classes this summer (which have been awesome), playing in a summer basketball league at the beach (even though I'm spending a fortune in gas) and treating myself to the occasional açaí bowl (which are a God sent).
Am I spending money that could be saved on more important things? Yes. But am I making a memorable summer for myself? You bet.
The bottom line is, you should do what makes you happy, even if it causes you to spend a little money. You're not going to remember a seemingly endless shift at work, but you will remember good times you had along the way. Life really is too short to not spend it doing something you love.
So this summer while you're slaving away at work, make sure to save a little money for yourself and to do something, buy something, or go somewhere that will make you happy. Keeping this quote as a reminder is a great way to start changing your perspective.
