How To Keep Building Your Brand During Quarantine

As a communications major (specifically DTEM- Digital Technology and Emerging Media) I am more cognizant that I myself am my own brand. With quarantine putting my work life on pause, I have taken this time to build and improve my brand!

How To Keep Building Your Brand During Quarantine

In This Article:

Here are my tips on how to use this time to your benefit and keep building your brand!

1. Update Your Resume

As unfortunate as it may be, sometimes you may need to tweak your resume to best pertain to the different jobs you apply to. For example, when applying for a waitressing job last summer, I chose to put my work with social media last because it doesn't pertain as strongly as my other experience in customer service does.

If you've been using the same resume for the past year, or even 6 months - it may be about time to scrap it and start fresh! This is the perfect time to update and maybe make a few versions of your resume to be ready when you're able to work again!

2. Update Your LinkedIn and Other Social Medias

My LinkedIn was severely outdated, so I took a few hours to restructure it and make sure it was completely up to date!

Although LinkedIn can sometimes seem like the most relevant / only relevant social media when it comes to work, it's really not. All of your social medias make up you - which in today's world, is your brand. Therefore, it is important to make sure that on all platforms, you are portraying yourself in a way that is positive and accurate to who you are!

I recently updated my social media's to be more aesthetic and accurate of who I am!

3. Search for Online Jobs

With life being pretty much on hold right now and many of us having been laid off, fired or unable to work - now is a great time to plan ahead and start sending resumes and applications in. This way, once everything starts to go back to normal, you'll be ahead of the game and hopefully there will be less of a gap where you're waiting for a job!

In addition to planning ahead and sending in applications, now might be a good time to look into starting that business you've always dreamed of or working on that remote job! This time period has shown us, probably more than ever before, how beneficial the internet is, especially when it comes to making a living!

4. Work on Multiple Streams of Income

The benefit of having multiple streams of income will not only ensure you're making good money and able to save, but it will also strengthen your skills and create more opportunity for you.

For me, this has always meant working numerous jobs. Before quarantine, I was babysitting, nannying, working clerical at my college, dogsitting and interning in the city. With these jobs, and any job, income varies. There might be a holiday, a week you're not needed, etc. so having multiple jobs and subsequently streams of incomes, will help prevent any difficult times when it comes to money.

I think that quarantine has taught many of us just how important this is and even more so, to have remote or online streams of income as well!

5. Don't Feel Bad

Easier said than done, I know. I think it is crucial to remember that if you're not able to find a job right now, odds are it's not because you're doing anything wrong. We are in unprecedented times and many businesses can't afford to stay open, never mind keep on their full staff or hire new staff.

Hopefully, for now, you are able to hold yourself above water. That being said, take it one day at a time and at whatever pace you need! It's okay to not feel motivated right now - the world has quite literally ended!

Most importantly, stay safe and take care of yourself!

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
