As everyone knows Tennessee has gone through an incredibly unbelievable time these past few weeks. As hard as I try I cannot put myself in that situation. I cannot imagine what it is like to have your home burned to the ground. I cannot imagine looking at once beautiful land and only seeing ash.
The mayor of Gatlinburg says that people "were basically running for their lives." Again, as hard as I try I cannot imagine that horror. It is in moments like these that I realize how truly lucky I am to have the things I have. When things like these wildfires happen it makes me realize that I can do more than just "talk" about how these things are terrible. I can do more than simply share an article and I can do more than simply write one. A lot of people are wanting to help but simply do not know how to so here's some resources that can help you get involved.
1. Donate to Red Cross. First Tennessee Foundation said they will match each donation give to Red Cross up to 50,000 dollars. So any donation big or small counts because families need the help.
2. Kroger. Kroger stores from the nearby area ( in East and Middle Tennessee, northern Alabama and southern Kentucky) are allowing customers to donate to the cause. Kroger customers are allowed to donate as much money or as little as they would like. In addition, Kroger is donating 10,000 dollars to the cause.
3. Wilderness at the Smokies Resort - 424 Old Knoxville Hwy., Sevierville. is doing a collections people can send clothes and goods for people who are in need. You can take things like bottled water and any supplies. The resort will sort and distribute the items to those who need them 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Wednesday-Friday.
For information, call 865-428-5770.
4. Remote Area Medical will take Gatorade and water to LeConte Medical Center and volunteer fire departments. Deliver to RAM headquarters, 2200 Stock Creek Boulevard in Rockford. If you are in the area Remote Area Medical will pick up large donations; if you have any questions feel free to call 865-579-1530.
5. Humane Society. You can donate to the Tennessee humane societies. Many stray animals were taken to nearby shelters to be taken care of. The donations will go to feeding and taking care of these animals.
6. University of Tennessee Center for Leadership and Service, 2238 Dunford Hall, and the Office of the Dean of Students, 413 Student Services Building, are collecting snacks, bottled water, and toiletries. You can drop off donations to their office or call 865-974-1039 to set something up.
According to many news sites many places will also be open to helping those in need so keep checking. I think this is where our nation needs to come together and help those in need so consider helping because Tennessee really needs it right now.
