As the battle at Standing Rock is gaining more media attention, it seems the resistance on the ground has gotten more severe. The protectors, those fighting against the North Dakota Access Pipeline, have been met with tear gas, rubber bullets, dogs, concussion grenades, and water cannons all for fighting for the right to clean water. What is happening at Standing Rock is an injustice to any consumer of water -which is every human being in the world.
The 1,200 mile long pipeline will be transporting crude oil from North Dakota to Illinois. This pipeline could lead to potential devastation when, not if, a pipeline bursts. The possibility of water contamination on that level is frightening. And despite all the possible health risks involved, construction is being done on sacred Native American land. Land which is supposed to be protected by an 1851 treaty. A treaty that has been spat on by the United States.
It is also worth mentioning that it is an issue that has single-handedly brought together over 500 tribes for the first time since colonization. That is historic. Every day roughly 1,000 to 3,000 people stand together in solidarity. The days are spent in prayer, chants, and peaceful protest. It cannot be emphasized enough how peaceful this movement is. It is a movement combined of people from all walks of life and age groups coming together in the fight for clean water. This is literally history in the making! Make sure you are on the right side of it.
If you would like to help fight against this injustice, you can do one or all of the following:
