Now that almost everyone is done with finals and summer is just getting started, a few months away from school can seem exciting, but overwhelming. Here are some tips on how to keep your summer balanced and productive:

1. Relax

Spend the first few days or even a week or so of your summer letting your brain and body rest.

2. Enjoy the little things

Don't stress about planning every moment of every day. Just spend some time enjoying being home or somewhere other than school and having some time to yourself.

3. Stay on track

Although relaxing and having fun all summer sounds amazing, if you neglect staying on track academically or at work, you will have a tough transition back to school or work in fall. Doing weekly activities, such as writing or reading to keep your brain active can help combat this.

4. Balance

Everything in moderation might seem cliche, but is important when trying to balance your work, social life, and health. Make sure to plan out your weeks to get a healthy dose of each.

5. Set goals

Set summer goals for each aspect of your life, whether it be to make new friends, or finish a project at work or a personal project, or to get healthy and fit!

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
