How To Have A Great 2017

Let's not have a repeat of 2016.

This past year has been hard. For a year that took far too many people from us, took far too much energy from us and gave us nothing in return, it doesn't come as a surprise that so many people are ready to leave it behind and look nowhere but into the future. Despite our eagerness to step into the new year, we need to be ready to release the past or risk being counterproductive.

Before the clock strikes midnight and the infamous ball drops, these are important things that must be done in order to let go of 2016, and welcome 2017:

1. Release toxic people from your life.

I know it's a cliché, cutting people off before New Year's, but the truth is, it's important. Allowing negative or unwanted people to continue taking up your energy isn't something you want in a new year. So let them go. The friends who have done you wrong time and time again, the ex who's social media you compulsively check, the person whose texts do nothing but drain you. Go through your contacts and start deleting. Go through your social media and start unfollowing. Let people go. Sometimes it's hard, but in the long run, it's beneficial.

2. Leave bad situations in the past.

After cutting people off, you have to leave all the terrible situations in the past. If there has been a moment that have done nothing but bring you down, let it go. You don't have to bask in negative situations forever: the loss of a job, a breakup, a failed class, etc. Allow yourself to feel the closure of the situation and leave it in the past.

3. Reflect on the past year.

As a common saying goes, history repeats itself. Sometimes we get so caught up in looking forward that we forget to look back. Though we should never bask in negative things, it's important to look back and remember them so they don't happen again. Reflect on the things that have happened and why they occurred. On the flipside, reflect on the positive things. In the midst of thinking that the past year was excessively bad, you may easily forget all the slightly positive things that also happened. Allow yourself to remember the good along with the bad.

4. Make resolutions.

Somebody once told me that New Years resolutions are just broken promises to yourself. I don't believe that's true. Though many people don't follow through with their resolutions, past March at best, the act of setting goals can never do more harm than good. Your resolution list doesn't have to be idealistic and far fetched. But putting even the smallest energy into the universe about the things you want to accomplish can help you accomplish them. Setting goals for yourself is a major key to getting organized and seeing what you want.

5. Have a positive outlook.

Having a positive outlook on the future can help manifest that positivity into reality. Going into something expecting it to be bad never has a positive outcome. Visualize what you expect your year to look like. See yourself reaching your goals, smiling, laughing, having fun. Whatever it is you want you year to be, visualize it then make it happen.

We all want to leave 2016 behind us. Make sure you do it the best way possible.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
