It’s Friday night in Greek Town, and you and the squad are hitting up the frats for an upbeat, yet predictable night out. Music blaring in your ears, shot one. Dirty converse dancing on sticky tabletops, shot two. Slurred speech and flirtatious antics, shot three. Soon enough, the room spins, the lights fade, and then everything goes black.
Meanwhile, a couple blocks away from the action, a few friends gather for a laid back movie night, and a bonfire in the backyard of their East Campus crib. It’s a beautiful, crisp night, and the sky is crystal clear. The stars seem to smile down at them as laughter echoes in the night air. Soon enough, eyelids grow heavy, breaths fall into rhythm, and then everything goes black.
When it comes to how you choose to spend your weekend (or $2 Tuesday), there is no right or wrong answer. I'm not going to sit here and bash anyone who's idea of fun is taking shots and dancing the night away, because I mean it when I say that we've all been there. The bar scene can be a blast, but it's not for everyone. A common misconception is that if you don’t party, you can’t have fun. Your college experience is what you make of it. If being wasted seems like wasted time, know there are alternatives.
College schedules can be demanding and stressful, so it’s important to take time to care for yourself. Instead of going out, indulge in downtime. Put on your favorite baggy sweats, and kick back in bed with your hot date “Netflix.” Order-in Gumby’s, Pickleman’s, or your favorite takeout food. Spend time searching for new movies and music online, or get together with friends for a relaxing wine night. Pamper yourself by visiting Tiger Grotto, or doing face-masks and nails with friends. Play up your creative side and get crafty. Spending time doing leisurely activities is a great way to recharge after a long day.
By not partying, you may find excess time on your hands. Try taking advantage of this time every once in a while to be productive. Catch up on homework, apply for a scholarship, or search for jobs. You will be the most productive if you maintain a clean living space. Clean your room and do your laundry, and you will instantly feel less stressed. If you have a job, maybe try picking up some extra hours. Organize your closet and sell clothes you don’t wear anymore; the extra cash won’t hurt. Go for a run, play a pick-up game, or workout at the Rec. You’ll thank yourself later for taking time to get things done.
Partying is definitely not the only way to have a good time in college. Mizzou offers plenty of other options, including sporting events, speakers, concerts, and other campus-wide events. Keep an eye out for upcoming events that interest you, and ask a friend to tag along.
Spending time outdoors can also be one of the best ways to reduce stress and have fun. Go for a hike on the MKT trail, climb the Pinnacles, or explore Stephen’s Lake Park. Grab a friend and go hammocking around campus, or take a day trip to a small town nearby. Try a new restaurant, go thrift shopping, or watch the sunset from the columns with good people. Opportunities all around you are just waiting to be discovered.
It may seem like you’re missing out on all the fun by staying in, but remember that you will be avoiding some serious regrets, hefty bar tabs, and early morning walks of shame. The party scene can be fun in moderation, but it’s definitely not for everyone. Remember that opting out of social engagements does not make you “lame” or “uncool.” Pay no attention to anyone’s opinion of you except your own. As long as you do things that fulfill you and spend time with people who make you happy, nothing else matters.
