10 tips for a summer you'll never forget.

Summer… No classes, work, or obligations (for some of us at least). It's so easy to lay around all day doing absolutely nothing but eating, binge watching netflix, and well.. more eating. All this feels so good in the moment, but by the end of the summer the realization of complete disappointing unproductivity sets in. Three months of life just completely wasted. Don't get me wrong, relaxing and being stress-free is obviously a priority, but so is being adventurous and making the best use of your time. To help combat intense summer boredom, I concocted a list of things to accomplish during the summer:

1. Travel

I know this is number one on my list. There's many things to see and do. Go to the mountains, go to the beach, go to a city (that isn't Richmond), just GO SOMEWHERE.

2. Study for fall classes

Getting ahead in your fall classes can be a huge boost. You'll already know what will be covered in class and you'll have basic knowledge of the material. You might be determined to not even think about classes during the summer, but think of all the stress relief you'll get during the fall if you take this opportunity. Do it for your future self.

3. Volunteer

Whether you want to do it for a resume booster, or to actually help people, volunteering can be so beneficial. Great examples of places to volunteer are a local food pantry, animal shelter, or a park. You can go on http://www.handsonrva.org if you're in volunteering in Richmond.

4. Adventure

Do something fun. Whether it be hiking, canoeing, concert-going, festival-going, road tripping, or camping. There's so much to do. Get out and see what the world has to offer.

5. Learn something new

If theres anything you're interested in, but have never pursued, now is the time. Learn to play an instrument. Learn another language. Learn how to surf. Learn how to cook (if you're like me and have to microwave everything).

6. Take one or two summer classes

I know it sounds awful, and you've finally got three months off from school, but taking a few classes during the summer can really, really take off from your load during the fall and spring causing a lot less stress and you could possibly graduate faster.

7. Exercise

Start yoga, or maybe boxing. Exercising is essential to your health, and when is a better time to start than during the summer? It can also boost your mood, give you more energy, and lead to being more productive. I promise, you'll feel so good about yourself afterwards.

8. Take up a new hobby

Photography, writing, reading, painting, biking. Whatever makes you feel happy and free. Hobbies are a great way to be creative and express yourself.

9. Make some money

Get a job, create something and sell it on etsy, sell old belongings on Poshmark. Then you can use this money to travel and go on adventures! Or help pay off debt from college. *internal screaming*

10. Spend time with family and friends

Spending time with others is so important to our well-being. Take your mom out to dinner. Go see a movie with your dad. Go to a waterpark with a sibling. Go to an art museum with your best friend. Make new friends.

So, what are you waiting for? Start making plans

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
