How to Have a 90's Summer

Do you ever wish you could bring back the 90's? Maybe spend a summer back then one last time? Each decade has it's shinning nostalgic moments. This is your chance to pick the best bits and pieces of the 90's and incorporate them into your summer. Make this a summer to remember with these suggestions.

1. Rent movies.

Okay maybe not a Blockbuster VHS, but Netflix is so convenient we forget there are still movie stores around. Go to a local movie store with some friends, argue over which movies to pick out, grab some snacks and spend the night watching movies. It's all about the experience.

2. Go thrifting.

The 90's were all about finding gems at the thrift store. Find some old flannels to tie around your waist, scuffed up Doc Martens, jelly shoes, and tattoo chokers.

3. Watch some old Cartoons.

If you're feeling some 90's cartoons, theres a site called NReboot that plays 90's cartoons all day plus the old commercials too, from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Watch them while sipping on your Capri-Sun.

4. Freezie Pops.

If you don't remember eating these all summer in the 90's you're lying. Stay refreshed with one of these, but don't forget those plastic edges are sharp.

5. Make a mixed CD.

Find the top summer hits of the 90's in all genres and make a bunch of mixed cds to drive around and listen to instead of using the aux cord. If you really can't part with your aux cord, make a bunch of 90's playlists on Spotify, or track down one of the early NOW CDs that we all used to have.

6. Call your friends.

If you really want to go all out, call your friends more often than texting them. It'll probably freak them out a bit, but it'll be fun.

7. Throw a pool party or find one.

Pool parties were all the rage in the 90's, you don't really hear about them too much today. You could even have a 90's themed one which would be even more fun.

8. Stop the ice cream truck.

Do this at least once, the nostalgia will immediately give you an adrenaline rush. It's a bonus if they have Flintstone push ups.

9. Get some disposable cameras.

It'll be fun to capture your summer through physical pictures rather than just on your IPhone.

10. Find a local concert.

You might not be able to see Nirvana, Hole, Bikini Kill, or Pearl Jam at a small local venue anymore, but you might be able to catch some sort of rising punk/ grunge band locally.

11. Watch 90's reruns.

Nick@Nite or TBS will play Friends, Seinfeld, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and more.

12. Play old video games.

Dust off that Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo or Gameboy Color and play some Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Mario 64, or Pokemon with your friends. Make sure you are sitting on the floor in front of the TV and have some 90's snacks for the occasion.

13. Go play some basketball at a local court.

Get outside and play some sports with your buddies. Don't get in a fight and scare your mom though.

14. Start a crappy band.

The 90's were all about rising bands, it'll be fun to jam with your friends and who knows you might actually be good. So start a band in your garage and annoy your neighborhood.

15. Super Soaker and water balloon war.

Cool off with your friends and have a fun water war, and remember to have little huggie drinks as refreshments.

16. Laser Tag.

Remember laser tag birthday parties? They're still fun in your 20s.

17. Marathon the X Files.

It's on Netflix right now and after watching 16 hours of Xflies we all become Mulder.

18. Go Rollerblading or hit up a skate park.

Release your inner Tony Hawk and go for a skate. And don't forget to listen to some Blink-182, Sum 41, and Green Day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
