Are you worried about the inclement weather? Are you apprehensive about traveling to classes this week? No need to worry! Michigan State University has some great advice on how to persevere through this winter storm.
As a student of Michigan State University, and like any normal human being living in a state with treacherous winters, I am always quite concerned on how to keep warm and stay sane during this 3-day winter storm. If it weren't for the formal emails that MSU had sent to me, I wouldn't have known better ways to tackle the winter blues! Here are some tips and tricks that even Mark Dantonio and Tom Izzo would stand by!
1. Layers, layers, and more layers!
Time to put away the shorts and crop tops, my friends. It's common sense that if the forecast shows a high of -9 degrees to bundle up. Dress from head to toe in full winter gear: a hat, gloves, a scarf, and a ski mask. Why do that, you may ask? To fight against the frostbite that can be contracted within 10 minutes of exposure of course! Don't forget to "Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from the extreme cold".
2. Don't drive to class because you will be screwed
If you do drive to class, be prepared for "slippery road conditions". These conditions may cause you to get into a car accident or be late to class, but no worries, East Lansing's 54B Court will be open in case you have to come in to justify your ticket. Oh wait, you just ran out of luck: as of January 28th, 2019 "East Lansing's 54B Court is closed today". Have fun paying for your ticket!
3. Why walk when you can ski to class!
Since driving isn't a safe option, and walking or taking the bus is time-consuming, try out skiing to your lecture! It's great for not only maintaining your body temperature, but it will get you to class faster, and the exercise is good for your health! Skiing isn't just meant for the slopes--try it out on Farm Lane and you won't regret it.
4. Go to class because we're not going to cancel anyway
So what if the capitol building is closed? So what other colleges in Michigan aren't in session? So what the governor called a state of emergency? Too bad, so sad: "Spartans Will" go to class regardless of the climate. We're committed to learning even if it is physically dangerous to get to your lecture. There may even be incentives to freezing your tail off; extra credit points anyone?
5. Keep your eyes peeled for "slippery conditions both indoors and out"
It's Michigan and it's January, so obviously it's going to snow. Sometimes snow may leave behind "icy patches" on sidewalks and roads. Make sure you are wearing shoes with a lot of traction because there is a high possibility of slipping and falling with the possibility of being injured. Trying to sue us for not having the sidewalks cleared? Good luck with that one!
These were some of the lovely highlights of the various emails that I have received from my college. They will benefit me greatly, and I couldn't thank the writers of the emails enough for the consideration and taking the effort to write out "tips" that are actually based off of common knowledge. What a waste of 5 minutes of my life and laptop/iPhone battery reading them.
Bottom line: this isn't advice. It's the basics of living in a colder climate. MSU, look out for the safety of your students. Stay warm, Spartans.
