7 Steps Handle Being Sick In College

If you're a college student the one thing you can agree on with anyone is that college is basically an all-out orgy for germs. You're exposed to so many more people and the potential viruses and bacterial infections that come with it.

From sharing drinks, to sitting next to the kid about to cough out his lungs in class, to practicing a bit of mouth to mouth, it's no wonder that a sickness can spread like wildfire. It's only worse if you're an unfortunate freshman stuck in a dorm and the girl that started with a mild sniffle has soon infected the entire hall.

There's nothing worse than knowing you still have to push yourself to your 8am or study for a test during the week, when all you want to do is curl in your bed and sleep for a thousand years. But I'm here to tell you that you're not alone in the sick struggle and if you're sick now (like me) there are easy and common-sense remedies that anyone should follow.

1. Drink Emergen-C like your life depends on it.

One little pack of this is loaded with Vitamin C and other minerals to help speed recovery and boost your immunity you desperately will need.

2. Resist the urge to go out on the weekend even if it's lit.

If you're still sick by the time Friday rolls around, do yourself a favor and stay in. Your body will thank you and your friends will understand. Plus you won't have to handle the small guilt of getting anyone else sick.

3. Layers on layers.

Cold weather means cold/flu season. Science has proven that the weather has a profound effect on your immunity and this means it's even more important to dress warmly to fight off that bug.

4. Eat even if you're not hungry.

For someone who revolves their entire day around when they eat, not feeling hungry when you're sick is a bit like a small heartbreak. However, your body needs food no matter what and will help you recover faster.

5. Try not to broadcast how sick you are.

Complaining won't do you much good, especially in college when everyone gets sick. Just dealing with it on your own is enough.

6. Stock up on as much NyQuil as you can.

If you just have a common cold then this medicine is going to be your best friend. It'll help you sleep at night and relieve certain symptoms.

7. The walk to class is usually not worth it if you're sick.

A regular walk around campus exerts practically all of your energy ever when you're sick. Half the time it's not even worth going to class when you're that ill. In times like this just listen to your body (however, if you have three exams you can't miss then I'll pray for you).

Feel better my fellow sick friends! It'll all be over soon.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!
