Having some creativity fixed into your schedule can be a big plus to your day; whether you’re in the office or in your third seminar class of the day, having some creativity will keep you alert and ready. Keep your creative abilities--or whatever creative ability you dream to have--in mind, and follow some of these suggestions to add a little more color to your day.
1. Doodle, doodle, doodle
I had an Honors English teacher my junior year who taught an entire unit about “marginalizing.” Basically, doodling during notes. As most teachers may see it as a distraction, it’s actually a good way for your brain to do a few jumping jacks, to get some of that built up energy out. Also, trying to connect your notes and doodles related may end up helping your memory. Give it a shot. Nobody’s doodles are perfect.
2. Step out of your comfort zone.
Don’t be afraid to sign up for a class or seminar just because it’s outside of your academic goals. There's nothing wrong with a Sunday night watercolor class, mid-afternoon yoga, or Salsa 101. Studies show that those who tend to try new experiences cope with change better than those who stick close to their comforts. Also, giving your likes and dislikes some feeling can increase memory, happiness, and energy. It’s no good to be so bland.
3. Take some personal time.
Now, it’s not all that creative to want some peace in being alone. But being alone doesn’t mean you need to be sleeping or in the shower. Go to the movie you want to see but your friends don’t. Go to your local park, check out the landscape. Go hiking, go buy some books, new makeup, or just look. Feel free to doodle or paint on your legs while watching MTV. Try new colored shades on your windows, or listen to a music genre you might find weird. You never know what wonderful thoughts will bloom while you’re experiencing some of the world with yourself.
There are plenty of apps to help you take some creative breaks, too. Drawing apps, meditation/noise apps, Pinterest, the list goes on. No matter how busy or how boring your days get, take the time to get creative. You’ll thank yourself later.
