How To Get Through Finals

Finals week is about to be upon us here at UMD. At other schools it might already be upon you. Here is a bit of finals week advice from the senior who is oh-so-ready to graduate in May. I hope my tips help.

1. Don't procrastinate.

Whether you have finals this week or next week, start studying now. Don't think that cramming will help you learn the information you need to know. I know it's easy to binge watch Netflix and be in denial, but it doesn't help you. Be smart and don't procrastinate.

2. Be Organized.

Make a to-do list of all the things you need to do before you go home for break. Then make a schedule of when you are going to do each thing. Making lists, scheduling yourself and organizing is very calming. It will help you to stay on top of everything and feel on top of everything.

3. Try to stay healthy.

Finals week is crazy stressful and hard on your body. As much as you think you can afford another all nighter, don't do it!!! Your body and your brain functions better with sleep. So make sure to get some sleep. Don't eat all junk food and make sure to drink some water with your energy drinks and coffee. Treat your body with respect.

4. Take breaks.

Finals are not the end all be all. Grades are not the most important thing in the world. So relax and don't let your life be overwhelmed with finals. Remember your health comes first. Take breaks. Plan fun things to break up the monotony that is finals week. Treat yourself.

5. Have faith in yourself.

Know that you are smart and you can do this. Positive thinking really does help. Now good luck and kick butt!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
