First, it's that resume, that thing you have been putting off doing. It’s the bane of everyone’s existence. I am not saying it has to be perfect, just organized. It needs to be organized chronologically, with your most current work first.
With your resume, you should include a portfolio of some type. Some internships and jobs need a portfolio of your work. This portfolio needs to be organized and neat. Whether it is a physical copy or a digital copy, it needs to all be in the same font and same layout. This is the first work the employer is going to see from you.
Timing is everything, so the sooner you submit your materials, the better. I am not saying that if you do not apply early you’re not going to get it, but applying early gives you time to apply to many things in case one opportunity does not work out. Also, arriving 15 minutes early is recommended for interviews; this gives you time to get your coat off, freshen up and relax a little beforehand.
What you wear is also important. Remember, professionalism matters! Nice dress shirts and slacks are a must for anyone’s wardrobe -- these are also known as business casual attire. Polos or button-up shirts and khakis or black slacks are the “go to” look. And yes, they look at your shoes. No dirty shoes, no shoes with holes. Preferably, wear ones that allow you to walk without falling over and prevent your pant legs from hitting the ground. Also, be sure to shower!
The final step before it is all out of your hands -- that daunting interview! As mentioned earlier, arriving early is very professional. Sit up straight, breathe a little bit, and pause when speaking. Everyone gets nervous -- it's expected. So breathe and pause. You do not have to answer a question immediately after it is asked. Say, “Thank you for meeting with me,” at the beginning and end. Professionalism is huge regardless of what type of job you are interviewing for.
Always remember to smile and look confident. If you look it, you will act like it. It is a great motto to live by.
