Summertime is the season of the skin. We bask in the rays, lay poolside for the warmth, pray for a perfect pink or beautiful bronze, and hope we don’t burn in the process. But all of that sun exposure can wreak havoc on our complexion. Between being burnt out and dehydrated and the hidden sunspots that are forming, our skin deserves to be treated with extra care. So, as you ask up the sun keep your skin in mind.

There are numerous ways to guarantee a seamless and beautiful tan this summer while enjoying all the seasonal fun ahead. Here are six tips on how to get glowing skin this summer.

Oil up

Face oils are not the same thing as an oily face. Too much oil on the face is counterproductive to good skin, but on the opposite end of things, dry skin and not enough oil can cause the skin to look dry and weathered. But oil can give you glowing skin this summer and prevent pimples. Positive oils come to carry natural antioxidants that prevent aging and reduce wrinkles. As a result, it hydrates the skin and reduces dryness. Even a few drops of oil on the skin can make your makeup routine look much better and even-toned (literally!). The oil fills in the little wrinkles on the skin and helps even the overall appearance, which makes your face look plump. Plus, if you have any sort of rash or skin condition, the anti-inflammatory property of oils can ease irritated skin and reduce rashes.

When to use it: It’s best to apply oil to your skin twice a day for optimum results. You can find morning oil and night oil. Both oils will carry different properties and nutrients while still hosting the same benefits.

Lots of hydration

The sun can dehydrate and damage your skin in as little as five to 10 minutes. That’s all it takes to get irreversible sun damage. What’s scarier is that this sun damage might not even present itself right away. It could take years until it shows its true sunspots. To prevent this aging and damaging process, be sure to hydrate your skin as often as possible. In addition to oils, you can find a moisturizer. Moisturize’s predominant ingredient is water but it’s also key to avoid certain ingredients to prevent unnecessary harm to your skin. Look for aluminum, DEA, MEA, TEA, mineral oil, and Parabens. If you see any of these listed it could be best to go for a different brand. If you’re unsure about which oil or moisturizer to use, you can hydrate your skin the old-fashioned and easy way—lots of water. Cold water will work its way from the inside out to plump up your skin and give it a glow the natural way.

When to use it: You can apply moisturizer once in the morning and again at night. However, drinking a glass of water at least every hour you are directly exposed to the sun could prevent skin dehydration. For regular activity, eight glasses of water a day is enough.

Prepare sunscreen

Summer is the season for sun exposure—the days are longer and the sun is hotter. This means that some people get a beautiful bronze while others are fretting over burns. No matter which person you are, you’ve still likely heard, rain or shine, the excuse of “I don’t need sunscreen.” That’s not true. Whether you are in the sun for 15 minutes in the shade or five hours fully exposed, to get glowing skin your face should always be covered with sunscreen. However, your skin type could determine the SPF number to use. For those with olive skin, SPF 30 could be best. Meanwhile, those with fair skin could benefit from an SPF 70. The difference is that the higher the number the longer your skin is protected from UV radiation.

When to use it: Read your SPF and apply accordingly.

Put on a mask

Face masks are not just for the spa, although the price might seem like you. You should aim to exfoliate with a mask as often as your skin needs it—which depends on your skin type. Masks come with all of the hydrating benefits, but they also clean out the pours and, dependent on the type of mask (charcoal, cream, gel, clay, etc), provide an entire host of benefits specific to your needs.

When to use it: You should use a face mask at least once a week during the summer. But if you can, a daily face mask would greatly benefit your skin.

Get a massage

A face massage is just as relaxing as a regular body massage, and it can help your skin glow. Serums also aid in the massage process as it exfoliates, tighten, help with acne, and aid with blood flow to the skin.

When to use it: You should massage your face once a day, for at least two minutes a day.

Pour in a powder

Powder mixes are good for pre or post-mealtime. A lot of the superfoods powder used to assist with glowing skin is made from plants. All it takes is to add the designated amount to water or smoothie, blend it, and enjoy it.

When to use it: Once a day, before or after a meal. It’s really up to you!
