Simon Sinek is most famous for his 2009 Ted Talk, "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" where he coined the golden circle and defined the Find Your Why which changed my life. Sinek says that all organizations know What they do, some know How they do it, and very few know Why they do what they do. While many businesses continue to struggle finding their why many individuals also struggle with finding their why as well. It took me a lot of soul searching but I finally created my why statement:
"Each day I will wake up with a mindset of continuous improvement and I will be eager to maximize all opportunities I am handed so then I can take what I learn and educate and coach others" -Lauren Carey
I wrote my why statement on a notecard which is carefully placed in my agenda. Whenever I feel stagnant or burned out, I pull out my why statement and read it out loud. When I read it out loud it reminds me of my purpose and gives me direction. There is no wrong way to create a why statement but here are 5 helpful tips to help you draft your why statement.
Brainstorm your Talents
- What are you best at?
- What do you like to do?
- What keeps you up at night?
Brainstorm your Values
- What virtues do you live by?
- What are your five core values?
- What is most important to you in your relationships?
Brainstorm your Purpose
- What do you want to be remembered for?
- What are you passionate about?
- What do you love to do?
Brainstorm your Skills
- What are you the guru of?
- What are your greatest strengths?
- What are you known for?
Brainstorm Your Impact
- How have you helped others?
- How have you positively impacted another person?
- What do other people say about you?
All of the elements you have brainstormed above will help you identify key elements for your why statement. In order to draft your why statement you need to identify what your contribution is and what your impact is. Use the following graphic to draft your why statement.

If you refer back to my why statement, it states "to maximize all opportunities I am handed so I can take what I learn and educate and coach others".
If you're still struggling to find your why, I recommend purchasing Simon Sinek's book "Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Action" or purchasing an audio book version.
