College can be an extremely stressful time, especially when it is your first semester at a university. Here are five ways to counteract that stress and come back looking better and brighter.

Write a TO-DO List

Taking a simple post-it note and writing down the priorities of the day makes it easy to see what needs to be done. You can plan out your day around those tasks and time manage much easier. Once you place a check mark next to the accomplished tasks, it encourages and empowers you to do so much more.

Meditate

Meditation is something I swear by, taking only a few minutes to breathe and evaluate your sense of self. This time to unwind and relax makes all of the difference in lowering your stress levels. You may feel much better.

Reward Yourself With a Sweet Treat

When accomplishing tasks back to back you may feel burnt out and unhappy. Think about an incentive that will push you to keep going. It can be as simple as getting an ice coffee or cupcake after a long day of hard work.

Listen to Music

During a time of stress, listen to your favorite songs. Think about the music that will either relax you or pump you up to persevere through those excruciating responsibilities. Music heals the soul.

Watch a Mind-less Sitcom

Sitcoms are full of cheesy jokes and light problems. They are relieving to watch in a time of unhappiness and/or stress because they take your mind off of the stress that is consuming you. It is upbeat and laughable. So get to watching "Friends" or "Young and Hungry" I know it'll make you feel a whole lot better.

For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
