I have always loved to read. I have pretty much always had my nose stuck in a book. I carry a book with me wherever I go and even tend to find myself a spot to hunker down and read while at family functions. It’s my way of ignoring reality and experiencing something new. I used to be able to finish multiple physical books in a week. Now that I am absorbed in my university studies, I tend to not be able to read as frequently but I still read as often as I can. I even write book reviews on my blog.
However, when you read as frequently as I do, you will also experience reading slumps. A time where you have no desire to read. I hate those feelings. I feel guilty every time I stare at my bookshelves and my to-be-read piles just waiting for me to crack the spines and dive in. I usually do everything in my power to get back into reading, but I am also aware that if I’m in the slump it takes time to climb back out.
In order to get out of my slump, I start by just enjoying the free time by catching up on tv shows and YouTube videos that I missed out on while enjoying the written worlds. Once I get past that stage, I delve into watching book hauls, reading vlogs, and other bookish videos on YouTube. That usually inspires me to find new books to add to my Goodreads and to my Amazon wishlist or to just buy immediately. I also fill this time with audiobooks. I use Audible often for that and then I also use Overdrive which is connected to your local library. Listening to audiobooks usually gets me really into reading again to the point that I often find myself laying in bed late at night with a book light attached to a new book as I read for hours.
My greatest advice to get out of a reading slump is to not rush it. I have found that when I force myself to read, I end up not enjoying what I am reading and it pushes me further into a reading slump.
