Summer is right around the corner and it is time to get in some serious playtime with your furry friend. Sunny days and walks go paw in paw according to your pup and while a breezy walk through the park is great exercise for both of you, there are a couple of things to be cautious of! Dehydration and overheating are two dangerous things that you can help prevent with these little tips! Don't forget to tell your pet you love them!
1. Take your dog for walks as much as pawsible.
I know that sometimes we just want to lie around and be lazy and trust me, your dog adores that pastime. However, it is extremely important for them to get regular exercise. So, grab the doggy bags and a couple of treats and go on your trek! If you're near wooded areas, let them explore. My puppy absolutely loves a new place to sniff (and mark). The fresh air is great for you, as well! (bonus!)
2. Be cautious of hot sidewalks and asphalt.
On especially warm days, asphalt warms up quickly and if you're wearing shoes, you may not realize it. If you're going barefoot (my favorite) and you find that you cannot stand on the pavement, your dog cannot either. Their paws are tough but are also sensitive.
A good test to see if the sidewalk is okay for your canine is to rest the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If you cannot keep it there, walking your dog on it is not a good idea. We can change our path if it's too hot; they cannot. Alternate between sidewalk and grass to make sure they're happy and comfortable! After all, their comfort makes us very happy. If your pup appears to be overheated, have them stand in cool water to cool down their paws.
3. Make sure that their water is cool and fresh throughout the day.
First, let me say this: NEVER put ice cubes in their water and never give them ice. The ice will be cold but it will be so cold that it can cramp up their tummy. Cool water is best for them because it regulates their body temperature and keeps them hydrated! Besides, who doesn't love fresh H2O? Don't worry if they aren't gulping it up right away, they know their bodies better than we do and they'll take water as needed.
4. Keep your house cool.
After being out in the sun, your puppy wants nothing more than to go inside and chill out, literally. If it's too warm outside, it is best to keep them inside (besides potty time) and they will be happiest with that decision.
5. Get a kiddie pool!
They're super cheap and even if your dog doesn't care for swimming, I guarantee that you will catch them cooling down in there. It's also a great way to let them be outside with you but you'll be confident knowing that they won't overheat. You can even get in with them (as long as you're okay with getting soaked from their playing).
6. Give your fur baby lots of love!!
They have so much love for you in their heart and it is the most rewarding thing ever. Give them plenty of cuddles and kisses and they'll give back everything in return! Keep them comfy and happy and you will be filled with joy! I hope these little tips help out and that they encourage you to spend time outside with your doggy as much as pawsible!
