Festivus is the holiday for the rest of us. On December 23 unadorned aluminum polls will be seen in windows across the country and maybe one day even the world. Created on Seinfeld by Frank Costanza, Festivus was the answer to the overly commercialized Christmas. It is the holiday that everyone has been dreaming of, consisting of four major parts, the poll, the dinner, the airing of grievances, and the feats of strength, Festivus is easy and fun for the whole family.

The Origins of Festivus

Festivus has a very simple beginning which makes the story much easier to remember when explaining to people who might not know of this great holiday.

The Aluminum Poll

The use of the aluminum poll as the only source of decorations can make this holiday very appealing to many people. College students in particular will be happy to learn that it is cheap, easy to install and care for as well as not breaking any RA rules for installing in dorm rooms.

The Festivus Meal

The Festivus meal is again very low stress and easy to accomplish for a college student. It is also full of many crowd pleasing dishes for the picky eater.

The Airing of Grievances

This holiday is a great way of explaining to your roommate that they really need to do the dishes, take out the trash, or not have as many overnight guests over when you have tests. Or just telling your friends and family what they really need to hear.

The Feats of Strength

The perfect way to settle the arguments that will inevitably start after the airing of grievances. It is also a great way to work of the calories that were consumed during dinner.

The Miracle of Festivus

Just as any Holiday, be on the lookout for festivus miracles, it could be as simple as finding your lucky underwear or passing that really hard class.

Now you are ready to go out and celebrate Festivus with your family and friends. Rase your pole, cook your meal, air your grievances, and win the feats of strength! Don't forget to give to the Human Fund. It's a great gift!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
