Buying new things or making new things for your dorm is be super exciting. Picking a color theme, buying wall decor, buying matching bedding, etc. can be exciting, but it can also be very expensive. Along with that, you might have a graduation party, which consists of lots of college essentials and cash; You'll have a birthday and Christmas where you might get some more cash and little things you'll use when you officially live in your dorm.
However, everyone is different and a lot of people never get the amount of money they need to make their dorm feel like home. Let me show you four tips for getting an adorable dorm without being broke on move-in day.
Buy your bedding from Walmart. Ross’s, or Marshall’s.
I got a whole set there (comforter, 2 accent pillows, 2 sheets, and one pillowcase) for $40. A few weeks after I had bought it, I went to Walmart and saw a super cute bed set for $13.
Also, make sure you get a neutral color you can work with. If you have a color theme you're trying to go with, make sure your bedding is fairly plain so you can work around it or are able to change your mind.
For example, my bedding is dark grey but my color theme is grey and purple. I'm buying more purple accent items to go into the room like a throw blanket, things to hang on the wall, etc.
When getting accent pillows, look in the kid's section.
All my accent pillows are considered "kids" but you can't tell the difference. They're pillows so it really doesn't matter, especially if they are accent pillows because they will just end up on the floor.
You'd think kids mean the pillows would be smaller but they're really not. They're fairly big and a good size for a twin XL.
Don’t be afraid to buy little essentials at the dollar store.
I got a throw blanket at Dollar General for $10. They also have tons of picture frames, some desk lamps, a few pillows, etc
. Buying for your dorm can be really expensive especially if you're buying everything, so save as much money as possible.
Remember that your dorm is smaller than you think.
It can be hard to not buy every cute thing you see to go into your dorm. Just remember that where you'll be at, will be small. Not to mention, you'll probably be living with one other person which is even less space you have.
Buy the basic essentials like bedding, storage space, organizers, etc. and keep the space of your room in the back of your mind.
