Jiminy Cricket is probably the most famous depiction of my kind. Oh, hello there, this is Steven's stream of consciousness. He's letting me take over this week so I can relay an important piece of information to you. So please forgive me if I get off topic, sometimes I can't control where I go when I start rambling.
Your conscience goes millions of places a day. You have thousands of thoughts, and only a select few make it to my control panel. Collectively, all of those thoughts I control make up who you are. But for whatever reason, some people don't allow their conscience to be their guide. And I'm here to tell you that you should listen to me more.
A lot of times there are too many thoughts I have to manage, and it confuses me, and then you in the process. Then, because you get confused, you more than likely ignore the confusion and think about something else and act on that. This is what humans call "fake it till you make it."
You see, this is because you take the easy option and don't allow me, your conscience, to sort out the situation and eliminate the confusion. You might guess an answer on a test, or fake an emotion to fool someone. This can be dangerous, and here's what you have to do instead. And it's really quite simple.
Take time to sit and think. That's it, that's all there is to it. If you take time out of your day to sit and think about how you feel, what you're thinking, and why you're feeling or thinking that way, humans are shown to be significantly liberated after doing so. It's true: taking this much needed time to figure out who you are and how you want to be seen by others can make you feel free to be yourself.
And that's the other thing: accept yourself. This is the most difficult part of the two-stage process. Once you take the time to figure things out, you have to accept that this is who you are. Do not fear judgment from others. If you let your conscience guide you, let loose. Be yourself.
Humans tend to neglect this second stage quite often, and it's fairly disheartening to my kind. This is our full-time job, and when the boss decides to quit, we're out of work. And we love working. But that's just it: you have to let us work. You have to allow us to do our jobs, which means you have to do yours. The key is solidarity (haha that rhymes did you see that?).
So take time for yourself and when you do, learn to accept this self you have discovered. We can only do so much for you, so now you have to realize that we need you as much as you need us. Be true to yourself, and just live.
