This past weekend, I was able to visit Orlando on an agency trip. Being an advertising major, I constantly have the opportunity to network with other professionals and learn the major keys of the communications world. The advertising industry is a fast-paced, constantly changing industry and being in the know on how people are making it in "the real-world" really gives you some awesome insight.
1. It is so much more than just the ads.
When you're looking into a career in the communications world, it's so much deeper than it seems. It's not just about what cool ads are coming out. It comes down to the expertise, exposure, environment and experience of the company you're looking to work for. The "company culture" is what produces the magic. I realized this while I was touring the agencies. Some agencies were amazing, but the culture didn't match up with my vision. You need to know yourself in order to know where you'll fit in!
2. You create value for yourself by creating value for others.
In the ad world, going above and beyond goes a long way. This means giving the client (or your boss) what they ask for plus something better.
3. Take advantage of everything, in every possible way.
Learn by listening, being passionate and extremely curious. Take any opportunity you can to put yourself out there, connect with people in the industry and learn from them.
4. Know a little bit about a lot of things.
Advertising is about one thing and its about a million things. It's critical to not only know how to sell a product but how to design one, how to take advantage of its PR release, and how to reach people emotionally as well as physically.
5. The key to being a great creative is to be a great observer.
Creativity is a reflection of what we see in the world around us and how we amplify it. This means listening to people, not just hearing them. This means taking in the experiences we have, instead of letting them rush by. In this way, we gain insights that are particular to us and our lives and we have a uniqueness to bring to the table.
