On social media as well as in real life, there is a lot of debating going on. People argue for more serious political issues such as gun control and abortion to more pointless, silly things like where the best pizza place is in town. We as a society are certainly one that loves to argue.
There typically isn't harm in a healthy debate, but how far is too far? When in a heated debate, is it more important to be kind or correct?
Stand up for what you believe in. Always. But is it really worth it to completely tear someone down for the sake of getting your point across and being "correct"? Are the condescending remarks that you make in attempts to change someone's mind really that important.
I'm sure you've seen it on Facebook before-people of opposing views arguing over something. At least one person probably doesn't have much knowledge of what they're even arguing over, so they turn to name calling and using personal digs at the other person to get their point across. Is tearing someone down really supposed to get a point across? (Surprise: it isn't.)
I've said it before and I'll say it again and again, think before you post/speak a nasty comment. You never know how deeply your words may go. If you have a stance on something you want to share, educate yourself on the issue and share solid facts to support your opinion. It's okay to argue and debate and try to get a point across but do so respectfully. Be kind to one another.
"Practice being kind rather than right."
