It’s that time of year again! Everyone is moving into their new college homes, starting classes and settling into a new routine. Sounds like a prime time for viruses to spread through campuses like wildfire. It happens at every college campus, and at SMU we call it the “Peruna Plague.” Essentially, it causes 70 percent of the campus to sniffle, cough or miss class to go to urgent care. Unfortunately, I am currently recovering from the plague, so I as I sit here coughing up my left lung, I have thought of with a few preventative measures you can take to avoid it. Many of these may sound like common sense, but you would be surprised on how many students just ignore them.
1. Take Emergen-C.
Hear of a bug going around campus? Add this to water to build up your immune system with a plethora of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and antioxidants to ensure your body has all of the nutrients it needs.
2. Sanitize.
Sanitize before meals. Sanitize after meals. Sanitize after class. Just sanitize all the time.
3. Sleep.
I understand that this especially difficult for all of the procrastinators out there. However, with all the stress and craziness of college, it is crucial to get enough rest. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
4. Eat better.
It is no secret that eating right boosts your immune system. Although it's tempting, try not to eat pizza for lunch and dinner everyday. Add some proteins, fruits and veggies into your diet instead. Another added bonus? You'll also avoid the dreaded freshman 15!
5. Exercise.
Yet another way to avoid the freshman 15 and to keep your body healthy. Always make time for exercise, even if it is only a few times per week. As an extra precaution (and to just be sanitary), wipe down the machines before and after you use them.
6. Stay hydrated.
I'm directing this to the coffee and Diet Coke addicts. I understand caffeine is VERY important, but make sure you are sipping water throughout the day, too.
If your immune system just sucks, and you are naturally prone to catching any and every illness that exists, be sure to go to the doctor if you feel even slightly under the weather. Getting sick in college is not an easy experience, so take all the preventative measures you can to avoid catching your campus plague.
