It's only the beginning of the week and you're already longing for the weekend? You're not the only one.
Whether it be in college, in work or just in every day life – some days are simply just easier than others to say the least. Ever forget to just take a second and breath because you're not real sure when the last time was? Haha, me too. I don't know about you, but I am notorious for losing all my motivation when I feel a bad day coming on. The slightest shift in my every day routine gives me total anxiety and changes my attitude and energy a lot quicker than I like to admit. I usually just end up wanting to lay down and sleep away all my responsibilities at this point. Anyone else ever felt that way? Although, that would just add to the cycle because then you're sleeping when you should be doing things. Anyways, you get my point. Life can be draining.
At this point, you're probably experiencing what I like to call a burnout.
Your teachers have assigned tons of homework and papers due in the same week, work has overscheduled you, you can't remember how many cups of coffee you had and you haven't slept in days because well.. you're having a mental breakdown is all. No big deal.
Trust me when I say, you're not doing it alone. We all have those days, weeks and sometimes months. Here's a few tips on how to avoid having a burnout breakdown:
1. Give yourself a break
Make sure that you aren't overworking yourself. Mental health and stabilizing that in order to keep going is so important. Allow yourself time to do things that de-stress you like going to the gym, watching an episode of Netflix or driving with the windows down. You're still important and sometimes stepping away from the work and relaxing is more beneficial than doing the work right then.
2. Make a to-do list
It's easier to know what you're doing and when you do need to do it by when you have something to look at. Make a list so that you don't crowd up your thoughts. Try writing out the list in order of importance. Nothing feels better than put a big all line through something you thought you'd never finish.
3. Get some sleep
This is a lot easier said than done considering that things like expressos and Mountain Dew exists to keep us thriving. Sure, this is an overstated tip, but it's so crucial. Barely being able to keep your eyes open is enough stress in itself. Do yourself a favor and lay that pretty head down on a pillow.
4. Surround yourself with a support system
Whether this comes from your family, friends or even your pet, find a small support team and let them be your uplift when you need it. It's not always good to do things alone. Let them love you beyond the stress. Support can be a healthy component in staying motivated and plus, who doesn't love to feel a little love?
5. Breathe and celebrate those small victories
REMAIN CALM: Don't forget to inhale and exhale during a time when you feel you are going to experience a burnout. It's important to keep on keeping on. Also, don't forget to celebrate those small victories. Sometimes just waking up and crossing one thing off your to-do list, taking a shower, or drinking two cups of coffee instead of five is a win. Any win is one to be celebrated.
