How To Stay Active In College...Or At Least Attempt To

I’m not the best person to take advice from, but hopefully my struggle can help!

How To Stay Active In College...Or At Least Attempt To

I personally struggle with staying active while at college. The work piles up, sleep is stretched thin, naps become a necessity, and the days you do have time you aren’t feeling well.

The biggest problem with homework piling up is that it usually results from procrastination. Meaning the only advice I have for this part is to get homework done whenever you have the chance. As far as actually getting the work done after you’ve started, take any reading to the gym with you. It might not seem like much, but walking on the treadmill for an hour at a time while reading can really add up.

Getting a decent amount of sleep is something that is very important for staying active and awake during the day. So, naturally, I have a lot of trouble maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. It’s understandable if you have an assignment due at midnight or by class the next morning, but normally I just end up talking to people until I see that it’s 2am and I have an 8am class. In my case, I just need to be more responsible. In the case of homework, try to get it done sooner rather than later and, if possible, sacrifice an assignment for your health.

Along with the lack of sleep comes the necessity of naps. Naps seem like they are an absolute must because of the amount of times that sleep at night is sacrificed. Even I don’t understand that the nap times could be added to regular sleep and I would have more time during my day. Just as getting a decent amount of sleep, not sleeping at random points in the day will keep you from wanting to lay in bed.

This may sound like terrible advice, but even if you’re feeling sick try and make it to the gym. Of course, take it slow that day, but staying active can help work the sick out faster. Additionally, if you don’t nap you’ll be regularly tired and have a better chance of sleeping through the night.

Make plans with friends to go the gym whenever you can. Even if neither of you really want to go, you’ll think the other one does and you’ll be compelled to stick to the commitment. Once at the gym, friends make the atmosphere much more inviting. You can run on the treadmill with someone, challenge each other, and do all those weird workouts you don’t feel comfortable doing alone. Going to the gym alone is important as to not completely rely on friends, but friends are a great addition.

Staying active is so hard to get into. You need to get up, go the gym and exercise, and then you’re all sore afterwards. However, it’s important to stay health for yourself mentally as well as physically.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
