The media has recently shed light on social injustices that plague women. Rapists set free, women's equality ignored--the list goes on. But these stories in the news are not actually "new." Women have suffered in society for hundreds of years; despite the many strides the gender has made since the age of suffrage, true equality will never be reached unless children around the country are educated on the ways in which women are still suffering.
Nick Ferroni, a high school teacher in New Jersey, decided to teach a few of his male students about what life is like as a female. In a brief social experiment filmed by SoulPancake (the makers of the famous Kid President videos), Ferroni decided to imitate the US Congress. He filled a classroom with students who believed they were voting on new school policies. Ferroni ensured that 80% of the students were female while the remaining 20% were male, a ratio that is the complete opposite in Congress.
Ferroni asks the class to vote on three proposed school policies:
1. Girls get a 21% discount on all school related items
2. Boys must give girls a 2-minute start between class periods
3. All boys must use the lockers on the second floor of the building
Each of the fake policies were modeled after policies that affect men and women in real life. The discount was meant to mimic the way men's care items are significantly cheaper than women's. An early start and separation of gender lockers were falsely created to protect the women from being distracted by boys throughout the school day.
Needless to say, the boys were not happy. During the video, one gentleman in particular is extremely vocal about his dislike for the new policies, which when voted on were passed with an 80% majority. "This is gonna turn into a boys' prison," said one of the boys, quickly followed by, "So basically girls are on a higher level than guys?"
At the end of the staged voting, Ferroni revealed the purpose of the experiment to his students. That was when the boys understood, with comments like "I was astonished" and "I thought it was so unfair."
Yes, gentlemen, it is astonishing and unfair. Kudos to Mr. Ferroni for giving some of his students the opportunity to experience injustice first-hand when they may have otherwise been unlikely to feel it.
