For those of you who don't know, "The Golden Girls" is a TV show from the 1980's starring Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. They play four older women who share a home in Miami. Blanche (McClanahan), a widow from the South, owns the home and works at a museum. Rose (White), also a widow, is an innocent woman from St. Olaf, Minnesota, and is one of Blanche's original roommates. Dorothy is divorced and a teacher. She is originally from New York and is one of Blanche's original roommates. Sophia (Getty) is Dorothy's mother. She is from Sicily and tells a story at least once an episode. She moves in with the others after her retirement home, Shady Pines, burns to the ground.
Now, you may be wondering what these four older women could possibly have in common with the lives of college students. As an avid watcher, I have learned that many of the events, situations, and lessons you come across while going to college are universal, and no one demonstrates it better than these "Golden Girls."
For example:
1. Everything looks better after a midnight chat and cheesecake.
2. There is a proper way of dealing with people, especially the haters.
3. There's always someone like Blanche in your circle.
4. And someone like Rose.
4. And someone like Dorothy.
5. And someone like Sophia who is always telling outrageous stories.
6. Off the wall statements make life interesting.
7. Sibling rivalry never really goes away.
8. You never outgrow being a fangirl.
9. You never know what kind of trouble you're going to get into with your friends.
10. True friends accept the good, the bad, and the ugly about you. They care despite of your faults.
11. True friendship means you are there for each other, both in the good times and in the bad.
These four friends knew when to laugh and when to cry with each other. They were always getting in to some kind of trouble and learning a valuable lesson along the way, just like the average college student.
