We all know how some situations at bars, especially for us girls, can turn south real quick. You’re out with your friends after a long week, having a few drinks, when suddenly a guy comes up behind you and starts flirting. So naturally, you flirt back because he’s pretty cute and hey, maybe he’ll buy you and your friends some drinks.
However, the longer he stands there flirting and talking with you, the more uncomfortable you start to feel. Suddenly this stranger thinks he’s part of your “group” and starts following you and your friends around, maybe trying to dance with you or get some action, and you are not having it.
I’m not saying all guys at bars are like this and simply go out to prey on women having fun, but this does happen more often than we know. So, what if there was a way to safety get out of the situation without the guy even knowing?
Recently bars around the world are serving up this secret code to help women get out of uncomfortable situations, whether that be from a stranger or a first date gone wrong. Bars put up signs in women’s restrooms that give customers instructions on how to order an “angel shot” to receive help. According to Business Insider, the most recent one was at a Hooter’s in South Africa.
“Are you on a date that isn’t going well?” is the first line the sign reads. I don’t know about you, but I would have some comfort knowing that the establishment I’m in would be willing to help a girl out that felt trapped. So many times, we go out to party and lose our friends, winding up with a guy we never intended to end up with. Most girls end up hiding in the bathroom, trying to call for help, but some girls aren’t able to get out of the scary situation on their own.
The breakdown of ordering this shot goes a little something like this:
Order it Neat: Your bartender will escort you to your vehicle.
Order it with Ice: Your bartender will call an Uber or Lyft for you.
Order it with Lime: Your bartender will call the Police.
This concept apparently began at a bar in St. Petersburg, Florida, called the Iberian Rooster, and since then more places have started to pick up on the trend. The news has traveled its way through social media to inform more people about this secret safety tool, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it started showing up in even more bars around the country. Although college towns are much larger and filled with bigger crowds, I know for a fact that college students would have more peace of mind knowing that ordering another round could be to their benefit.
Even though it's not offered at most bars yet, the talk on social media could lead to it spreading fast. Women could start seeing these signs pop up in more bathrooms at their favorite nighttime spots and clubs.
Of course, if you ever feel you are in any type of danger in
a setting like this, you should always alert an employee or call the police
yourself. However, if you feel trapped in a situation with a stranger and can’t
get away, ordering “just another drink” could end up saving your life.
