Christmas is too commercialalized and people have forgotten what it is really about. We all know the story tale of how the Grinch stole Christmas, but that wasn't good enough. Now retailers are stealing Thanksgiving too. The holiday is now officially usually spent shopping or standing out in the cold, all in hopes of saving $100 on some big screen TV. Gone is the time with family, a relaxing day of food and fun. The biggest sales are offered at the very time most are sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner or grabbing their pumpkin pie, so many make the eating much earlier and rush out just to make it to these sales.
Stuffing doesn’t get made as cooks monitor their computers and smartphones for those lightening deals. Relatives don't show up, instead lured to some mall's one-hour only cheap TV ad. Gone are the calm and quiet, the slow cooking and the smells. Welcome to the hype, the greed and the stress of getting one of those great deals in limited quantities available during a small amount of time, the time you'd normally be eating your dinner. By the time most would be finishing up their pumpkin pie, all of the really good deals are long gone.
Does Christmas start too early? I for one love the holiday season. I am a holiday junkie. I crave all things Christmas. Is it because Christmas is on display for us right after Halloween ends? Are we forgetting about a special holiday?
The real question is will the outrage and irritation most of America feels at this point impact the rest of holiday sales? Will being forced to give up our holiday to try to snag a TV that we can actually afford put the damper on the time of the year?
Black Friday starting on Thanksgiving means that those who have to work on this night will not be able to be bonding and spending time with their families. Black Friday is good--I’m not going to lie--but why pass up turkey, apple pie and the works for long lines, adults acting like children and mad chaos?
Unfortunately there is no bah humbug meter available large enough to change this but we strongly suspect retailers have put the Grinch in Thanksgiving this year. Everybody loves the holidays. There’s nothing wrong with picking your Halloween costume and wishing for a white Christmas. However in this day and age, we skip from Halloween to Christmas. TV plays costume advertisements and before we know it, and Christmas tunes and sales are going up. We are celebrating Christmas far too early! Let's at least have a good Thanksgiving meal first, right?
