Thanksgiving was on Thursday, and most people had Thanksgiving celebrating what us Americans do best. Eating. But did we ever stop to think of what Thanksgiving really is about, and what we are really thankful for? Probably not.
Thanksgiving happened because America was celebrating a great harvest. They planted their own food, killed their own animals, and prepared their own food the homemade way. Wal-mart wasn't invented so they couldn't go out and buy a pre-cooked turkey, there was a lot of work put into place.
Thanksgiving also happened because we pushed Native Americans out of our way to get the land that we wanted, and guess what? It's still happening today.
Native Americans are protesting their right to keep their sacred land, sacred. If you haven't been following the news, a oil company is trying to put in a oil pipeline through sacred Native American land. The government isn't doing anything to stop it either. Native Americans are still fighting for their right to be equal citizens here. They have been pushed aside, and have tried to be thankful and quiet for as long as they can. But now tribes from all over the country are coming together to peacefully protest this pipeline.
There is a lot of weird things going on in the world right now, and this is one of them. If there was something valuable to the United States and our country we wouldn't be trying to put a pipeline into it, we would be going around it.
Be thankful for everything you have.
Be thankful that we have the privilege to express how we feel about something. Be thankful you aren't sitting at the front of these protests being sprayed with water from a firehose. Be thankful that you have a family that supports you. Be thankful that we live in this awesome country. Be thankful for your health. Be thankful for your family and friends. But don't forget, we still have a lot of inequalities going on in our own country.
Be thankful.
