How Tau Beta Sigma Changed My Life

Joining such a great organization was the best decision I've ever made.

When I started college, I told myself I would never join any sort of sorority. My sophomore year, that changed and it changed my life for the better.

My sophomore year, I joined Tau Beta Sigma, national honorary band sorority. Learning about the five qualities and eight essential factors of every member was very eye opening. Just striving to follow those would make someone a better person in and of itself.

Only a week after I joined the organization, I was elected secretary for our chapter. It might not be a huge office, but being a brand new initiate, it was a huge honor. It was also very difficult for me to be part of the leadership because I've always been a very shy person. I really had to break out of my comfort zone.

A couple years later, I decided for personal reasons to transfer schools. It was a hard decision, but a necessary one for my mental health. The new school was a much larger one and I was so nervous for so many reasons. Would I fit in? Would I ever be able to make any friends?

All those questions were answered my very first chapter meeting. Everyone was so inviting and welcoming. Some of my best friends are people I've met through the sorority. Since then, I've held two committee head positions and will be holding another this upcoming semester.

I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to be associated with or for a better life experience. I've grown as a person in so many ways. My leadership skills and my social skills have both grown exponentially. I've learned how to work with people and in groups better than I ever had before. I've made connections that I'll have for the rest of my life and connections that could help me in my career for the rest of my life.

If anyone is questioning whether or not they should join this or organization, or any other organization for that matter, I'd suggest you go for it! You'll meet so many people and grow so much as a person! You'll make so many lifelong friendships that will last you the rest of your life. It looks great on a résumé and helps you in your career later on in life. You'll always have somewhere you fit in because you have sisters everywhere that will always be there for you and support you. Joining was the best decision I've ever made. I encourage everyone else to do the same

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
