Whether you are trying out a strict diet, can't handle large portions of heavy foods, or are simply trying to loose a few pounds for that Christmas vacation on the beach, Thanksgiving dinner itself can be a nightmare. Although most people swoon at the though of turkey and potatoes and pie, other people wish they could opt out of the feast and simply enjoy the company of family and friends. However, since a large meal is painstakingly prepared by someone you love, it's not easy (or polite) to say no. As a health and nutrition major, I cringe at the average 4,500 calories people take in on Thanksgiving. For that reason, here are some tips you can use in order to enjoy your meal while not feeling guilty and not offending your family chef.
1. Load up on veggies.
Whether it's a salad, green beans, or broccoli, stack those vegetables on your plate. Get the bulk of your meal through your vegetables (which is what you should be doing all the time anyways).
2. Choose the dark meat.
Many people will go for the light meat because it is said to have fewer calories than dark meat. However, light meat has about 46 calories per slice where dark meat has 50 calories. That's only a 4 calorie difference. Dark meat also has more vitamins and has a richer taste, so you can't go wrong.
3. Skip the drinks.
Whether it's wine or soda or juice, just skip it all and opt for water. Most people don't realize how many calories they take in from liquids. When you drink water you are not only saving hundreds of calories for your meal, but you're also helping your body out by getting proper hydration.
4. Indulge in your #1 favorite
I'm not a fan of deprivation. Don't deny yourself your favorite food, whether it's a slice of pumpkin pie or a helping of mashed potatoes with thick gravy. Enjoy every bite and move on!
