I know you’re probably thinking, "Amber, spring break already started," but before doing so, I think that it's important to note it is still early in "Spreak" (Yes, I just made that word up. Yes, I did just combine the two words ‘spring’ and 'break’). Carrying on, it is still very early in the break, and there are also some schools that haven’t even started their "Spreak," so bear with me.
Now, I know I’m not the only who had original plans of going somewhere (i.e. Cancun, Miami or in my case, L.A.) exciting for spring break, and then at the last minute, everything just fell through. At first, you’re a little bummed out, and then you kind of get over it. During that final week before spring break, you’re up late at night stressing over midterms and papers, and you feel like you whole word is about to come crashing down on you because you have been assigned a million and one papers and assignments to do. Then you really start to wonder if your professors even care about your well being because how could they? Correction: How dare they assign you this much work to do? In one week. All at once. I’d like to add that it is not only stressful but traumatic as well. You have experienced all that trauma and have done all that concentration, which quite frankly should be rewarded because you’re basically learning an entire semester in one week. This is a skill that you have acquired after years of practice, and as they say, no good deed should go unnoticed.
Anyway, you take a moment and think to yourself, “I can’t wait until this is over, so I can go to someplace magical with all my friends. Yay!” Then you remember that you have nowhere to go because your plans fell through, and all that pain and anxiety that you had thought left before just comes rushing back like a pile of bricks. Then you think to yourself, “What is my life right now?” Well, if you can relate to this all too familiar feeling, I am happy to say that I have come up with a possible solution that may cure those "Spreak" blues when you have to spend it at home.
Let's think about this: What are the things that we think about when we think of spring break? These are my top three things:
1. Hotel
Everyone loves staying in a nice, preferably five star, hotel, that has lavish rooms with grand bathrooms, and you can’t forget the complimentary soap. Let’s be real - how many of us live in homes where there are heated tile floors in the bathroom, and the bedrooms are as big as penthouse suites? Here is my possible solution. I would move into a different room of the house, live there for the week and convince myself that mom and dad aren’t sleeping down the hall. Maybe someone will come into your new room while you’re gone for the day and make your bed.
2. Food.
Spring break is when you can go out to different restaurants and eat whatever you want because everyone knows that spring break doesn’t actually count. At home, you probably don’t have a plethora of menus to choose from displaying different kinds of food. Here’s my alternative: I love to cook, so I would go online and find some of the recipes of my favorites things that I like to order when I’m on vacation. I would then go to the grocery store to buy the ingredients and cook them, making sure that I make something different every night of the week. I would then eat in my dining room and would pretend that I’m really eating on a beach somewhere on the tropics. Hopefully, someone comes and asks me if I want more water.
3. Beach.
Okay, who doesn’t love the beach? Speaking as a reformed beach lover, I love the beach - not so much the sand, but then again, you can’t have everything. The beach is a place where you get to spend time with Mother Nature in water. From the sun and to wearing cute bathing suites, the beach is where it is. Unfortunately, there is no way to bring the beach to your home, but there is something you can do. You can set up a lovely bath in your tub. Get your hands on some nice bath salts and just soak away. For those of you who don’t have tubs, you can set up a rich and fulfilling shower. Try investing in aroma salts to make your shower smell and be enriching for you. You can take the time to relax in the warm water and pretend that you’re floating along the shore somewhere off the coast in Jamaica.
There you have it. This is my (really short) list of things that you can do while you’re at home during spring break. I really hoped that this helped cure your “fomo” of “Spreak” for those of you who weren’t able to go somewhere. It’s just good to know that you are not alone.
