Sorority recruitment is drawing closer and the excitement of both you and the initiated sisters of each sorority at your school is at an all-time high. You are about to find your home away from home and they are about to welcome sisters into an organization that means more to them than just the letters on their t-shirts.
Although this time is exhilarating, it is also nerve-wracking. Don’t worry, it is completely normal. Here are just a few tips to survive sorority recruitment as a potential new member.
1. Don’t be afraid to be the best version of yourself. Recruitment is the time to find which sorority and group of girls that best fit your interests, your values and your personality. The sisters from each of the sororities are looking for the same thing in you. As long as you are 100% yourself, you will find where you belong in the end.
2. The recruiters are just as nervous as you. It is alright to be nervous. You’re walking into a room full of girls that you don’t know. The sisters of each sorority are going through the same thing, except they’re waiting in the room while a group of girls that may become their sisters walk in. No matter if you are a potential new member, or a sister of that sorority, first impressions are still nerve-wracking. Each group wants to make sure that they are being the best version of themselves.
3. Talk about the things that are important to you. Recruiters want to know things about you. They want to hear about your interests, your summer, your classes, even your family and friends. We’re girls, we love to talk. Also, don’t feel that you’re talking too much about a topic or about yourself. That is the point.
4. Ask questions. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, don’t be afraid to ask. That is what the recruiters are there for. They will answer your questions as best they can, and make sure that your concerns are either diminished or at least minimalized. It is important to make you feel as comfortable as possible during the recruitment process, so that it continues throughout your time in sorority.
As a member of a sorority, I was in your shoes. I have also been in the shoes of a recruiter. Trust me recruitment is fun and all of the above tips are intended for you to survive the recruitment process and find the sorority that is right for you.
