How To: Survive July in Oklahoma

Having summer fun when it's hotter than hell's pepper patch

How To: Survive July in Oklahoma

To anyone who has ever had the sultry pleasure of residing in Oklahoma during July, we all know it is by far the hottest month of the year. With an average temperature of 93 degrees and a heat index well above that, it's best to stay in the shade and keep the A/C cranked up. So just what is there do to when you're sweating like a sinner in church? Have no fear: here are six ways to beat that Oklahoma heat.

1. Spend the Day at a Water Park

There is no better way to cool from the summer sun than to spend a day in the water. Lucky for Oklahomans, we have two well-known water parks at our disposal. For those in the Tulsa area, Big Splash Water Park is open seven days a week all summer long. This water park features a lazy river, wave pool, kiddie area, five different water slides, and a "water roller coaster" called the Master Blaster. Make sure to look for specially marked Coca-Cola cans to receive a discount when you purchase a ticket Monday – Thursday.

For those in the Oklahoma City area, White Water Bay is the place to go. With eight different slide rides, an area just for kids, Castaway Creek, and the Big Kahuna, this water park is sure to keep you busy and cool all day long. You can even save a couple dollars if you buy tickets online in advance versus at the Main Gate. Even though you'll be cool in the water, don't forget to grab the sunscreen before you go!

2. Grab a Snow Cone

What better way to cool off from the Oklahoma heat than grabbing an ice-cold snow cone. Snow cones are not only cheap, but a great excuse to get out of the house this summer. If you're in the Tulsa area, check out Josh's Sno Shack for the best snow cones in town. From Expo Square to 91st and Memorial, Josh's has locations all over the Tulsa area. Make sure to check out the Josh's twitter, to see if there are any discounts going on before you go.

3. Slide the City

Have you heard about the glorious event that is Slide the City? If not, sit back and buckle up. Imagine a giant, 1000 foot slip 'n slide going through the middle of your city: water spraying everywhere, inflatable tubes rushing by, feeling like a little kid again! Well, it's your lucky day, because Slide the City is coming to Oklahoma City on Saturday, July 25. The slide will be at N Shartel and NW 8th Street, and it's only $25 to register. Visit their website for more information.

4. Get a Pool

Now, I understand going out and financing a new underground pool isn't an option for all of us Oklahomans out there, but hear me out. With $20 and a trip to Walmart, you can have your very own lounging pool to stay comfortable in the sweltering July heat. Maybe you won't be able to dive, or jump, or swim laps, but you will get the cooling comfort of a swimming pool without the price. Make sure to grab your shades, and get your tan on!

5. Go to the Lake

In a state with over 200 manmade lakes, this is an obvious option when trying to not succumb to a heat stroke. A boat often isn't necessary, as many of Oklahoma's lakes have designated swimming areas. Head on over to one of Oklahoma's many lakes to cool off for the day, and make sure to wear your life jacket! (With all the rain Oklahoma has gotten recently, check the lake water levels here before you go.)

6. Stay Inside

Seriously, when Oklahoma has those days where the temperature is 100+ degrees, do yourself a favor and stay inside. At that point, why brave it? Drink lots of water, bask in the glorious air conditioning, and watch some tv. Netflix and Hulu are only $7.99/month. Do anything but spend your time outside.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone does not try to help their self before asking others. How can someone else be expected to help you if you do not first do that yourself? I'm all about helping those that need it when the time comes, however whenever someone does not even attempt to help him or herself first then that becomes a huge problem. As we all have learned, people tend to take advantage of us in one way or another. I am sure we all read this short story when we were younger and it follows that same principle:
