It happens to most of us at least once. Our schedules aren’t lining up or another class is full or maybe it just comes down to only one class being offered. No matter the reason, most college students will experience the dreaded 8 a.m. class at least once in their college career. But I’m here to relax any fears you may have about an 8 a.m.
First off, I highly recommend avoiding an 8 a.m. at all costs. Yes, you may think you’re an early bird. Yes, you may say to yourself that since you woke up earlier than that in high school, that you can handle it. I’m sorry, but it’s much different and more difficult than you might think.
But it isn’t impossible. While taking a class at eight in the morning isn’t ideal, you can make it a worthwhile semester that you won’t completely hate.
The number one piece of advice I can offer when having an 8 a.m. is too go to sleep early the night before. Like really, really early. It’s college, so an all-nighter will probably happen at some point, but going to bed early most nights will help when you have to leave your bed behind in the morning.
Also, bring a snack with you to class. Bringing some fruit snacks, a bagel, or anything quick and easy to eat will make your morning class so much easier, and you won't have to wake up as early to make or buy a big breakfast. It’s not the healthiest option, but it does help you catch a few more Zzzs and still have something in your stomach.
Finally, you should keep an open mind. Early morning classes aren’t most people’s first choice, but sometimes it’s the only option. Still, it’s only for a semester and then you’ll go on a nice, long break where you can hopefully sleep in more. Stay positive when going to your 8 a.m. because you’ll get through it, slowly but surely. As someone who also has one this semester, you can at least take comfort that you’re not alone.
