How Joining A Sorority Is Like Getting Sorted Into Hogwarts

Maybe we are going to Hogwarts after all?

Sorority Recruitment is a big deal in the life of a college girl. It's a big deal trying to find your home away from home. Freshman year of college is an intimidating time, so finding that home away from home is even more important. Sorority Recruitment seems like a foreign concept to some people, but honestly, it's very similar to Hogwarts students being sorted into houses at Hogwarts.

"Houses will be something like your family"

According to Professor McGonagall in the Sorcerors Stone, she tells Harry and his fellow first years that their houses will be like 'family." This is very similar in sorority recruitment because you are literally given a family after joining. You get a big, grandbig, maybe a twin, an aunt, greatgrandbig, cousins and more. So just like the Hogwarts students, the house you get is also like your family.

It's literally a house.

During recruitment, the different sororities are called "Houses." Girls during recruitment will say something along the lines of "I got invited back to this house..." or "I cut from this house..." It's literally the exact same at Hogwarts! Basically, the four groups are called Houses, just like the different sororities during recruitment.

It's about values.

The National Panhellenic Council has the different sororities pick their new members based on values and the new members pick where they want to be based on vales. Just like at Hogwarts the different students are sorted into the four houses based on their values. For example, Ravenclaw's core value is wisdom. Whereas, Gryffindor's main value is bravery.

Members live in and with their houses.

In the Harry Potter books and movies, you see that the Hufflepuffs live with the Hufflepuffs, the Slytherins live with the Slytherins, etc. In Greek life, some houses require their members to spend one year (sometimes two) in sorority housing, whether that be in the sorority dorms or in the sorority house itself. This is exactly the Hogwarts students living with each other.

Members eat with their houses.

If you're lucky (like me) your sorority house comes with a meal plan. Now the dining room at my house isn't nearly as fancy as the Great Hall of Hogwarts, but the members of sororities that do have meal plans can eat together. Eating together creates a certain bond between people. The students of Hogwarts eat together with their respected houses, just like sorority girls do with their sorority sisters.

Houses play sports against each other.

Intramurals are a huge part of Greek life! This is the same at Hogwarts. Imagine Hogwarts without Quidditch... That's right you can't! The same goes with intramurals and Greek life. Sorority girls play sports just against the other sororities, just like the Hogwarts house Quidditch teams play against each other.

In your house, you face trials and victories together.

No matter what house you are sorted in at Hogwarts or whatever house is written on a bid card. This house is there when you are getting ready for a date with that boy you have been wanting to ask you out or whenever he broke your heart. Your house is there for you. Your house is there when you are trying to find a job, make a bad grade on a test and whatever else may come your way. No matter if you're at a University and a member of Greek life or a witch at Hogwarts your House, is not only your house. It's your home.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
