Like most, I began using social media right when it became popular. I was just starting high school and everyone wanted an easier way to keep in touch. I remember the day Instagram first launched and how confusing the whole idea was, but soon it became a worldwide application used by young and old. Although popular apps like Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr are useful and entertaining, I've noticed how difficult it is to start an account and how hard it is to actually maintain it.
Ever since I started using social media, I've been very self-conscious as to how everything looks if it fits and if people would like it enough to follow me. It may be the tiny OCD in me, but social media has made me even more of a perfectionist than I was before. Instead of just posting a picture on Instagram, I have to make sure it looks right, and if it fits the color scheme of every other photo in my collection. Having a Tumblr isn't as fun unless you have a steady amount of followers who constantly like and reblog your activity.
Social media may have had a great effect on our society, but something that was supposed to be fun has turned into a hassle and more of a chore. If I don't post anything on my social media, I sense that my friends/followers have gotten bored and the follow count slowly goes down.
Why is it that we feel so insecure about our social media? Well, if you look at it this way, our social media is a way for people to see us from a different perspective. We want people to see our personality the way we want them to see it. We want them to be interested in it. So we spend so much time editing and making sure every little thing is perfect so that we can have a great following of people being interested in our lives. We want people to question: "Where do they live, it looks beautiful? I wonder how they are as a person, they are gorgeous."
Instead of wondering these things in person, we wonder them online, something that is easier to do when we have a collection of poems and posts and tweets to view.
How do you feel about your social media accounts?
