How to embrace the fun of Fall in Charleston while it's still summer outside

How to Be Seasonally Basic: Charleston Edition

Here in Charleston, it is hard to be 'seasonally basic'. Things like wearing flannel shirts, instagramming a picture of fall trees, or drinking pumpkin spice lattes like water is tough when it is still 80+ degrees outside. But if you still want to embrace your inner basic white girl (you know you're guilty), we need to adapt. Here are six ways to add a hint of Charleston history and charm to your seasonally basic Fall activities:

1. Pumpkin Spice Fro-Yo (PSF)

When it's too warm outside for that latte, head to Yogurt Mountain for some pumpkin spice fro-yo. Places like Trader Joe's and Harris Teeter also have pumpkin flavor ice creams available, and if you're feeling very bold, go for the Persimmon's cafe pumpkin caramel custard.

2. Instagram your fall beach trip

Make your friends that go to school up north jealous by instagramming your October beach trip. Don't forget to use that x pro II filter to make yourself look tan, and use clever hashtags like #itsoctober or #charlestoned.

3.  Take a REAL haunted house tour

Because Charleston is one of the oldest/most historic cities in the country, take a haunted house or haunted jail tour downtown you know has some history behind it with a company like Bulldog Tours for just $20. CAB is even offering some free tours for students in the coming weeks. You'll be able to have fun with your friends and see your walks to class in a whole new way.

4. Carve a 'Charleston' pumpkin

To celebrate Charleston being voted the number one city in America for the fourth year in a row, carve your pumpkin with a palm tree, the new CofC logo with the outline of the Cistern, anything that just screams Charleston.

5. Go to a 'Fright Night'

Places like Boone Hall and Magnolia Plantation have 'fright nights' available all month long, and are good for all ages. From haunted hayrides and corn mazes, to costume contests and s'mores, you can find something to do with a group of friends. Tickets start as low as $8 for certain activities.

6. Bring the Movie Marathon Outside

If you are living off campus, chances are you are living in a historic house with a nice front porch. Take advantage of the nice fall weather by bringing your scary (or not so scary) movies outside by streaming your movies outside on your laptop, or even use a projector (DIY projector here: http://bit.ly/1t5YP1i ) . Don't forget the hot cider and the plaid blankets!

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
