How Rich I Would Be

I would be plenty rich without horses.

How Rich I Would Be
Erica McMurray

Without horses, I would be very rich with money. Without feed to buy and vet bills galore, I could buy every piece of clothing in the latest fashion magazines. I could afford to buy a Netflix account and go out dancing every night. I could travel the United States and maybe the world. My savings account would be fat and happy, and every pay check would stay safely tucked away. I could get my hair highlighted and my nails done. I’d drive a car that gets more than 12 miles to the gallon. I wouldn’t have a horse trailer and I wouldn’t need my expensive saddles and tack. I’d have more time, and wouldn’t ruin every pair of jeans I own. My shoes wouldn’t be mud caked and the inside of my truck wouldn’t look like a tack room. I would not have the bad knees or the broken bones. I would not wake up in the mornings and cringe as I roll out of bed. I would have so many material possessions.

But with horses, I am rich with so many other things.

I am rich in friends. I have found the best of people and the greatest of friends through horses.

I am rich in laughs. Every day I am granted laughs and giggles galore from the horses and the people who surround me because of them. I laugh when Pepsi looks like an ungraceful camel running through the pasture, or when one of them gets into something they shouldn’t be.

I am wealthy in memories. Most of my wonderful memories surround horses. They have influenced my entire world.

I have an endless supply of beautiful views. I step outside and see the wonderful sunsets and the flowing of manes.

I am prosperous in opportunity. I have been given most of what I have from my dealings with horses.

With horses, I have found my heart full and my wallet empty. But there is no trailer hitch on a hearse and money can get you a lot of things, but a full heart is not one of those things. Give me a million dollars and I would be poor in a year. Horses eat money as if it was hay, but the things that I receive back are more then what money can buy. So I will continue to empty my wallet, pouring every nickel, penny and dime I have into this, and I will continue to receive the most marvelous things in return.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
