OK, if you are a person of color, a sistah, a brotha, and have been around people who are not, then you have probably heard, or been told by someone that, “I have a black friend.”
Your next thought may be, “And…?”
However, sometimes you are in this situation and may not be a very confrontational person, so you may be unsure of what to do or say next after this statement.
If you or someone you know has ever dealt with a problem such as this and is unsure of how to respond, here’s my list of eight possible solutions on how to handle it.
1. Walk away, no further contact should be made.
2. Simply say, "And...?"
3. Awkwardly snicker and pretend you didn't hear them.
4. Do the blank stare.
5. Pull out your phone and act like something important just came up.
6. Respond with, "So, I'm assuming you voted for Obama as well?"
7. Look off in the distance and pretend you saw someone who looks familiar and run in that direction.
8. Refer to number one.
In the end, if someone ever says this to you in conversation, don't be afraid to let them know that saying they have friends outside of their race doesn't excuse them from saying things that personally make you uncomfortable.
