How Playing A Sport In High School Helped Me

My athletic experience made all the difference.

How Playing A Sport In High School Helped Me

Like most kids, I grew up playing sports. There were a few years when I moved around a lot and couldn't join any teams, but I missed being an athlete more than anything.

So I decided to start a girls volleyball team for my high school. It took a while to get the process started, but slowly it happened. I got the coaches and the girls to be on the team. It was a club team for a year before it became an official sport for the school.

Even though it was a club sport we still had practice from three to five every day and we had games a few times a week, even multiple times a week. We had team bonding time for all the girls to get to know each other.

I think that it's a great idea to be involved with sports in high school. Here's why.

1. Time Management

You have to figure out how to be at practice and all the games and still pass all of your classes and keep up with homework. It sometimes sucks, but there are ways to make it work.

2. You have a group of friends

You spend so much time with your team that they basically become your school family. I'm not saying you'll like everyone or get along with everyone all the time, but you make some great friends on a sports team.

3. You're staying in shape

You're staying in shape by constantly being at practice and running all the time. It's not always fun because I hated running, but hey, now I can run for a while and not get tired!

4. Teamwork

Learning how to work with other people is a skill that everyone needs to have. Being able to cooperate with the people around you will help you so much in life.

5. Patience

I know for me when we started the team, some of the girls had no idea how to play the game. When you have to teach someone else how to do something, you learn how to be super patient.

6. Memories

You create so many memories from being on a team. I can remember bus rides and random things during practice. Some of my best memories from high school were from my volleyball team.

There are many great things about being on a sports team in high school. It was awesome for me and I think everyone should do it!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
