I have always considered myself to be an old spirit. Vintage movies, television shows, and particularly music have held my heart for a number of years. My combined love for vintage music and Carytown, a small, welcoming, and vibrant shopping area close to the city of Richmond, lead me to find one of my very favorite places in the world, Plan 9 Records.
Plan 9 Records carries a vast selection of music old and new. Members from the community are able to bring in any old records, CDs, VHS tapes, and other music apparel which are then resold to music collectors like myself. Since I drive a more antiquated car, a 1997 Toyota Avalon, I have the distinct pleasure in being able to purchase both cassette tapes and CDs to listen to wherever I go.
Lucky for me, Plan 9 has an incredible amount of music selections to offer. Whenever I visit -- which is often -- I first make a pit stop at the cassette tape shelf and sift through every single tape and usually have to force myself to pick just two or three. Some of my personal favorite gems have been Kansas's "Carry on My Wayward Son," Foreigner's "Double Vision," and The Best of Jerry Garcia.
Once I've gone through each of those carefully, I scan the CD sections to find artists I am interested in, which are categorized by genre and also alphabetized to make your searching process easier. Two of my best finds have included live album box sets from two wildly popular 80s rock bands, The Rolling Stones and AC/DC which I proudly blast in my car on any road trip.
Although I cannot say that I have my very own record player, I undoubtedly look through the immense record selection whenever I visit Plan 9 as well. My boyfriend and I also find this as a great pastime as he received his record player for Christmas this past year, and we never leave Plan 9 without at least one new record to listen to. Some fantastic finds have been Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors," The Best of Earth, Wind, and Fire, and even Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA."
What I love so much about Plan 9 Records is that I could, without a doubt, spend an entire afternoon there and never get bored. With so many different genres of music out there to discover and tap into, I can confidently say that I always leave there having learned something new or thought about new music I want to look into or research.
Whether you're a veteran music collector or you've not been very interested in music at all, I would urge you to pay a visit to Plan 9. With artists and genres old and new, you're bound to leave with some interesting music in hand and always a piece of musical history.
